Idle power plants raise expenses by 29pc

With an unabated increase in Bangladesh’s power overcapacity, idle power plants increased power sector expenses by 29 per cent in the financial year 2022–23 compared with the year before, with Tk 17,621 crore spent as capacity charge. In 2021–22, the Bangladesh Power Development Board paid Tk 13,701 crore in capacity charge.

Rooftop solar power promises $1b savings a year

A 2,000-megawatt new rooftop solar capacity could help Bangladesh save between $476 million and $1 billion annually, according to a study of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). “While the economic benefits of rooftop solar are clear, its slow progress shows the sector is held back by lack of awareness, low confidence, perceived risks, high import duties, and tight fiscal conditions,” it said.

Bangladesh’s Summit Group in final talks to sign LNG deal with Petrobangla

Chinese firm to build solar power plant in Bangladesh

A joint venture of Fujian Yongfu Power Engineering Co Ltd of China, Air Waves Pvt Limited and Moni Traders Limited will set up a 70MW solar power plant in Bandarban from which the BPDB will buy per unit of power at $9.99 – equivalent to Tk10.96 – for a period of 20 years.
